Ancient Greece is considered to be the cradle of western civilisation. It flowered more than 2500 years ago, developed democracy, advanced science with important discoveries and enlighted us with the philosophy of Aristotle, Socrates and Plato. Europe, a continent of 47 nations with different and overlapping cultures, being an assemblage of kingdoms, republics and principalities. Visiting Europe as a tourist presents a multitude of possibilities and choices. Which countries, which cities, which attractions, will it be a cultural tour, a relaxing beach holiday, an all action vacation - decisions, decisions. The capital cities are obviously an excellent starting point. Thorough planning is essential to eliminate frustration and disaster.

In Europe you can look forward to an abundance of antiquated buiding, castles, palaces, cathedrals, churches, Roman ruins, dwellings, to name but a few. For culture vultures there are a plethora of theatres, museums, art galleries, great symphony and chamber orchestras, opera houses and on and on. Perhaps not to be missed on a tour of Europe are the cities of Venice, Rome, Florence, Saint Petersburg, Barcelona, Vienna, London and Athens. Don't miss the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Vatican City, Rome, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, the Acropolis in Athens, the waterways of Venice, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Visit the state of San Marino which occupies just 62 square kilometres and claims to be the oldest republic in the world. Or perhaps Britain and Ireland, with their temperate climate, beautiful landscapes, historic cities, delightful villages(many with pubs and inns) and dramatic coastlines. If you desire mountains and snow give then consider Switzerland, Austria and Northern Italy.
